ENKAPSIS: HIERARCHICALLY STRUCTURED COMPLEX WHOLES
Testifying on behalf of Ernst Lehmann, who was embroiled in a virulent intrigue of which more later, the Munich dermatologist Franz Wirz* (1899â1969; NSDAP, 1933) wrote from the Hauptamt für Volksgesundheit (Main Office of Public Health) to the senate of the University of Tübingen on May 10, 1940. In his letter, he praised Lehmann for his efforts in the attempt to establish a âGerman Biology,â a legacy of Hans Schemm who, like Lehmann himself, had sought to expand the significance of biology far beyond narrow subject boundaries:
[Lehmann] is aware that the entire political thinking of National Socialism is biological, as the Führer himself has repeatedly expressed ⦠At this point, however, I want to emphasize that the goals set by Hans Schemm were more far-reaching. Schemm was an enemy of so-called materialistic biology. He instead embraced those ideas, which today are subsumed under the slogan of âGanzheitsbiologieâ. In terms of its content this [Ganzheitsbiologie] most closely corresponds to those thoughts that have more recently been articulated by Meyer [Adolf Meyer (-Abich)], Hamburg, Kötschau [Karl Kötschau (1892â1982)], Nuremberg, and others. But Schemm was right when he recognized that in order to establish such a biology and render it useful especially in schools and at universities, the foundations of the real material biology cannot be completely abandoned. It is exactly in that sense that Schemm recognized in Lehmann the ideal person â¦â to carry this plan forward.
